Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her grandmother and mother. Ford suffered from anxiety disorder that was rooted in the word association when she was a teenager. Ford's interest in acting began when she was young. She was a part of in the National Youth Theatre. She had been accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School. After a couple of days, she realized that the school was not for her. Ford applied again to Central School of Speech and Drama and, after her fourth application, she was finally accepted. Her classmate included Shaun Dingwall, who would play a part in the role of Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford's first appearance on television was a 1991 episode Surgical Spirit. By the when she finished her studies, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate was seen in television programmes such as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly as well as London's Burning in the Nineties. Tate also performed regularly at the theater, ultimately joining in the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate began to gain attention because of her stand-up comedic performances in 1996.
